The LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) vote was traditionally a guaranteed delivery for any Democratic candidate, no matter how conservative their views on gay rights. Starting with Bill Clinton, they made promises of equality legislation to stir up some grassroots support. For many years the gay population had been resigned to disappointment about the inability of Democratic candidates to make good on those promises.

The question is, with conservatives splitting the Republican Party, and conservative Democrats standing in the way of progress for equality issues, will the gay voters finally lose their patience and vote on other issues? And furthermore, will this have a significant effect on the electorate in 2012, when Obama may need every demographic he can get?

LGBT Voters, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Democratic Party

Since the Stonewall riots of 1969, the gay population has been more inclined to vote for the party of the Civil Rights Movement. With a more conservative agenda, Republicans have alienated most of the gay voters with their strong, religious-based opposition to gay marriage.
